About Tourist Visa in Thailand

The Tourist Visa remains the most popular entry option for visitors to Thailand, perfect for extended holidays, family visits, or exploratory trips before committing to long-term residence. With recent changes extending visa-exempt stays and the introduction of the 60-day stamp for many nationalities, Thailand continues to welcome tourists with increasingly generous terms.

While designed for tourism, the tourist visa also serves as a starting point for many expats, allowing time to explore the country, set up banking, and prepare for conversion to longer-term visa categories. The flexibility to extend and potentially convert to other visa types makes it an important tool in any Thailand visa strategy.

A single-entry tourist visa allows 60 days per entry, extendable once for an additional 30 days at any immigration office for 1,900 THB. Multiple-entry tourist visas are valid for 6 months, allowing unlimited 60-day entries within that period, each extendable for 30 days.
Some conversions are possible depending on your nationality and desired visa type. Tourist to Education (ED) visa is commonly allowed. Tourist to Non-B (business) typically requires leaving Thailand. Marriage and retirement visas have specific requirements that vary by immigration office.
There's no official limit, but immigration officers have discretion to deny entry if they suspect you're living in Thailand on tourist visas. Generally, spending more than 180 days per year on tourist visas/exemptions may result in questioning or denial.
Technically, any work activity in Thailand requires a work permit, even remote work for foreign companies. While enforcement varies, working on a tourist visa is illegal and can result in fines, deportation, and blacklisting. If you need to work remotely, consider the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) designed specifically for digital nomads and remote workers.
Visa exemption is free entry on arrival: 93 countries (US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, South Korea, China, etc.) get 60 days, extendable once for 30 days (total 90 days). Other eligible countries get 30 days or visa-on-arrival. Tourist visa must be obtained before travel, costs money, provides 60 days per entry, and offers multiple-entry options. Both prohibit employment.
Overstay fines are 500 THB per day, maximum 20,000 THB. Overstays exceeding 90 days result in bans: 90-365 days = 1-year ban, over 365 days = 3-10 year bans. Even one-day overstays are recorded and may affect future visa applications. Always extend or leave on time.
